Fragaria virginiana AKA Wild Strawberry is the parent species of most modern strawberry cultivars. Its trifoliate leaves spread by runners, forming new plants along the ground and creating dense colonies. In spring, it produces white, five-petaled flowers, which are followed by small, edible red fruits in summer.
Native to Ontario.
Grows best in an average to moist, well-drained soil, partial shade or shade and is quite adaptable to drought conditions. This plant spreads by runners, which can be separated from the parent plant, to form new plants.
