Tulip Tree: Liriodendron tulipifera
Tulip Tree: Liriodendron tulipifera
A narrow, upright tree with a pyramidal crown and large, tulip-shaped leaves. Yellow-green tulip-like flowers bloom after the leaves are fully developed, with some dried bracts persisting into winter. Four-lobed bright green leaves turn golden-yellow in the fall, and bloom time is May to June.
Native to Ontario and parts of North America.
Caring for Liriodendron, commonly known as Tulip Tree or Yellow Poplar, involves providing it with the right growing conditions and regular maintenance. This deciduous tree prefers full sun to partial shade and well-draining soil. Plant it in a location with enough space for its eventual size, as Tulip Trees can grow quite large. Water the tree deeply during dry periods, especially when it is young and establishing its roots. Mulching around the base of the tree helps retain moisture and suppress weeds. Pruning is generally not necessary unless you want to shape the tree or remove dead or damaged branches. Liriodendron is relatively resistant to pests and diseases. With proper care, your Tulip Tree will showcase its beautiful tulip-shaped flowers in spring and provide you with shade and visual appeal in your landscape.
