Also known as Waldmeister or Asperula odorata, this plant produces small, fragrant, star-shaped white flowers with four petals. Its aromatic foliage starts out bright green and deepens in color over time. The whorled leaves create a dense, mat-like groundcover, making it one of the most popular choices for shady areas.
Introduced to Ontario.
Grows best in an average to moist, well-drained soil, in partial to full shade. Has a tendency to die back or go dormant during heat and drought periods of the summer, but often revives with fresh growth in the cooler autumn temperatures. Can be invasive by rhizome in optimum growing conditions. A good companion to early spring bulbs planted in combination or throughout.
