This slow-growing conifer from the cypress family typically has a narrow, pyramidal shape and grows 30-40 feet tall. Its reddish-brown bark peels off in thin strips, and its silvery-blue to dark green foliage lies flat against the branches. The tree produces waxy blue, berry-like cones that attract birds and small mammals.
It prefers full sun and well-drained soils, including dry, sandy conditions. The tree is drought, salt spray, erosion, and air pollution tolerant but does not thrive in wet soils, high humidity, or high nighttime temperatures.
Native to North America!
Upright juniper cultivars are a good alternative for visual barriers where cedars are typically used. 'Skyrocket' is a narrow cultivar, useful for planting in a tight area of a landscape.
