Caring for an indoor Dracaena marginata, commonly known as the Dragon Tree or Madagascar Dragon Tree, requires attention to a few key factors. First and foremost, this tropical plant prefers bright but indirect light, so placing it near a window with filtered sunlight is ideal. It is important to maintain a consistent watering routine, allowing the soil to dry out before watering thoroughly but ensuring that the roots don't sit in standing water. The Dragon Tree appreciates moderate to high humidity levels, so misting the leaves or placing a humidifier nearby can be beneficial. Regularly dusting the leaves with a soft cloth or gently wiping them with a damp cloth helps to keep them clean and free from dust accumulation. Lastly, fertilizing the plant every two to four weeks during the growing season with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer helps to promote healthy growth. With proper care, an indoor Dracaena marginata can thrive and bring a touch of tropical beauty to your living space.

How to care for your

Dracaena marginata

About care instructions

Plant care can vary depending on placement, light and exact environment. You can always request plant care help here.

Water: 2-4 weeks

Let the plant dry out completely between watering - water when the pot is completely dry. Make sure to plant in fast-draining soil with a drainage hole for best results. Depending on the season and light, you will need to water the plant every 2-4 weeks.

Sun: shaded light

This plant requires medium light. It can tolerate low light, but it wants to see a bit of sun every day. Placing it in a north-facing or east-facing window would be ideal. While it will survive your dark corners, it won't thrive in them. In the summer, you can place them outside in a shady area.

Humidity: low

This plant doesn't care about how humid it is. It will work perfectly fine near that vent you want to cover up.

Genius Genus

Dracaena

The Dracaena family consists of 170 different species, including Dracaena marginata, Dracaena compacta, Dracaena fragrans, Dracaena massangeana, and Dracaena braunii. These plants originated in Africa and Southeast Asia, with some being found in Central America. Many of these varieties are characterized as being tree-like, with a single cluster of leaves at the end of the trunk. Dracaena have ringed stalks formed from their leaves falling away as they grow. The top of the plant often resembles a crown.

Dracaena are our most popular easy plant for a good reason. The plant is tolerant of lower light and is also drought-resistant. We have seen these plants recover from long periods of neglect.

Most common names include the Corn Plant (Dracaena fragrans) and Dragon tree (Dracaena marginata).

Perhaps one of our favourite thing about these plants is that they come in every shape and size and take unique shapes in your space. While the most common form is staggered with multiple per pot, perfect for any corner, there are many twists, weaves, and other formats to try.

Recently the Snake Plants were reclassified as Dracaena, but you'll find them in their own collection to do them justice.
