Also known as Athyrium goeringianum 'Pictum', this striking fern emerges in spring with deep burgundy-purple fronds that mature to a soft silvery-green, accented by rich purple stems. Its graceful, clumping habit has a slight weeping effect, adding movement and texture to shaded garden areas. Slowly forming colonies through shallow rhizomes, it's an excellent choice for brightening up shady borders or woodland gardens.
Grows best in a rich, moist, well-drained soil in full to partial shade. Colours are more distinct in light shade. Stems can be pruned off in the spring.
