Engelmann’s Ivy, also known as American Ivy or Five-Leaved Ivy, is a vigorous climbing vine valued for its lush foliage and exceptional seasonal colour. Glossy deep green leaves with five coarse-toothed leaflets create dense coverage through the growing season, while small clusters of green flowers appear from June to July. In late summer, inedible grape-like berries develop along striking deep red stems, adding ornamental interest and attracting birds. As temperatures cool, the foliage transforms into rich bronze-red tones for a spectacular autumn display. Slightly less aggressive than the species, Engelmann’s Ivy is an excellent choice for covering fences, walls, pergolas, and other vertical spaces.
Caring for Parthenocissus quinquefolia, commonly known as Virginia creeper, is relatively easy and straightforward. This deciduous vine is known for its vigorous growth and stunning foliage, making it a popular choice for covering walls, fences, and trellises. To care for Parthenocissus quinquefolia, provide it with a well-draining soil and a location that receives full to partial sunlight. Regular watering is important, especially during hot and dry periods, to keep the soil consistently moist. Mulching around the base of the plant helps retain moisture and suppress weeds. Pruning is typically done in late winter or early spring to remove any dead or damaged growth and to control its size. With proper care, Parthenocissus quinquefolia can thrive and provide a beautiful display of red, orange, and purple foliage in the fall.
