The Common Hackberry is a hardy shade tree with upright, arching branches that form a rounded, spreading crown. Its bark develops distinctive corky ridges, starting out tan and maturing to a weathered gray over time. The simple, ovate leaves with serrated edges are a soft light green in summer, transforming into a bright yellow in the fall. It thrives in a variety of soil conditions and produces greenish flowers that give way to round, fleshy, berry-like drupes in a deep purple hue, adding ornamental and ecological value to the landscape.
Native to Ontario.
Celtis can tolerate wind, pollution and a wide range of soil conditions, including wet, dry and poor soils.
