AKA Eastern Redbud, the Canadian Hemlock has sweetpea-like red-pink flowers that bloom profusely on bare branches and even on mature trunks. Fruit pods are brown and flat, about 5 cm long. With a vase-shaped growth when mature, heart-shaped green leaves turn an attractive yellow in the fall. Bloom time is April.
Native to Ontario and other parts of North America, many types of wildlife are supported by the flowers, seeds and leaves of Redbud.
Hemlock grows best in full sun and tolerates partial to full shade. Will tolerate varied soil conditions and pHs, but not overly wet or dry soils. To promote general health, prune out dead branches. Part of the legume family, it is capable of fixing needed atmospheric nitrogen. Intolerant of drought and should be watered regularly during prolonged dry spells, particularly when plants are young.
