AKA American Linden, Tilia americana has fragrant pale yellow flowers and ovate dark green leaves turn a pale yellow in the fall. Small nutlets with attached leafy wings follow the flowers, and winter twigs and buds are reddish in colour. Bloom time is late spring!
Native to Ontario and parts of North America. The common name "basswood" is derived from "bastwood", in reference to the tough, inner bark (bast) which has been used to make rope and mats.
A good shade tree tolerating some shade and drought. These trees attract pollinators and thrives in partial shade to full sun.
