Also called Korean Feather Reed Grass or Diamond Grass, Calamagrostis brachytricha is a warm season grass with glossy green leaves that are wider than acutiflora cultivars. Slight arching leaves form airy clumps, and fluffy bottlebrush-like plumes emerge light-pink, changing to a golden-tan. Foliage and flowers dry and persist through the fall and winter.
Grows best in full sun to partial shade in a moist, well-drained soil, however, will tolerate most soil types. Brachytrica will have a tighter habit and flower more profusely in full sun conditions. Prune foliage to 10 cm in the spring to make way for new growth. Unlike some other Calamagrostis varieties, the seeds of brachytricha are not sterile. However, they are easily controlled.
Warm Season: These grasses are much slower starting in the spring. They do not push new growth until temperatures warm in early to midsummer. They flower later in the summer or fall with most blooms remaining into the winter. Most warm season grasses can tolerate heat, humidity and drought; some even thrive in these conditions.
