Palms are an inclusive term used to refer to a broad selection of plants based on their appearance. In actuality, most palms fall into a wide variety of Genera, with a range of origins resulting in many different care requirements.
  
Palms can range from shade-loving thirsty plants to desert-dwelling drought-tolerant ones. 
  
Archeologists point to the Mesopotamians' use of palms starting more than 5000 years or more ago. They are mentioned multiple times in historical religious texts, including The Bible and the Quran. 
  
Most palms have large evergreen leaves called fronds that sit on top of unbranched stems. 
  
Throughout history, palms were symbols of ideas such as victory, peace, and fertility. More recently, they are significant Landscaping plants in the tropics and have become symbolic of warmer weather and vacations to those who live in colder climates.
